What are dental braces (teeth braces)?
Dental braces are fixed orthodontic appliances used to correct dental malocclusion issues, such as protruding teeth, overjet, overbite, crowding, and spacing. Depending on factors like the patient’s requirements, budget, and aesthetic preferences, different types of braces are available. While metallic braces are the traditional option, aesthetic alternatives such as ceramic braces and lingual braces are increasingly popular.
Braces treatment typically lasts between 12 to 24 months. During this period, patients are required to visit their orthodontist 1-2 times a month for adjustments. Dental braces are effective in treating even severe cases of crowding or gaps, ensuring a healthier and more aligned smile.
What Happens in Dental Braces Treatment?
Dental braces treatment is a step-by-step process aimed at correcting dental misalignment. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Consultation and Evaluation
The process begins with a consultation, during which the orthodontist examines your dental condition and addresses any existing issues, such as cavities or gum diseases. Once resolved, radiographic examinations like lateral cephalogram, OPG, bitewing, or occlusal X-rays are performed to assess the extent of misalignment and plan the treatment. If jaw surgery, such as jaw expansion, is required, it will be incorporated into the treatment plan.
2. Braces Placement
Brackets and jaw spacers are fitted to the teeth. Spacers help create space between the teeth to accommodate wires and elastics. The orthodontist then places the wires into the brackets to begin the alignment process.
3. Regular Adjustments
After the initial placement, the patient typically visits the orthodontist once a month for adjustments to ensure proper alignment. The initial adjustment period for braces lasts around three weeks as the patient gets accustomed to wearing them.
4. Post-Treatment Retention
Once the braces are removed, the patient will need to wear a removable or fixed retainer to maintain the corrected alignment and prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original position.
This systematic approach ensures that dental braces treatment yields long-lasting results.

What to Expect After the Dental Braces Treatment?
Once your dental braces treatment is complete, here’s what happens and what you should expect:
1. Braces Removal
- Your orthodontist will carefully remove the brackets and wires.
- The bonding agent used to attach the brackets will also be cleaned off, leaving your teeth smooth and polished.
- Any gum issues or irritation that developed during the treatment will be treated if necessary.
2. Sensitivity
- You may experience mild tooth sensitivity for 2-3 weeks. This is normal and will gradually subside.
3. Retainers
- Removable Retainers: If you’re prescribed removable retainers, you’ll likely need to wear them for 24 hours a day for the first two months. After that, retainers should be worn at night for at least 6-12 months to maintain the alignment of your teeth.
- Fixed Retainers: If you opt for fixed retainers, they will be bonded to the back of your teeth. Proper hygiene is crucial to prevent plaque buildup around the retainers. Ensure they remain intact and report any breakage to your orthodontist promptly.
4. Follow-up Care
- Regular dental checkups and proper oral hygiene will help maintain the results of your treatment.
- Be mindful of any changes in alignment and consult your orthodontist if you notice any issues.
With proper care and adherence to retainer usage, your teeth will stay aligned, giving you a long-lasting, confident smile!
When are Dental (Teeth) Braces Required?
Dental braces are typically elective and primarily aesthetic treatments. However, they can also correct several functional dental and jaw issues. Common conditions where braces may be required include:
- Overjet: Protrusion of the upper front teeth beyond the lower teeth.
- Overbite: Excessive overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth.
- Anterior or Posterior Crossbite: Misalignment where the upper teeth bite inside or outside the lower teeth.
- Spacing: Gaps between teeth due to missing teeth or naturally spaced teeth.
- Overcrowding: Lack of space in the dental arch, causing teeth to overlap or become misaligned.
- Open Bite: A gap between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed.
- Diastema: A noticeable gap between two teeth, often the upper front teeth.
Braces not only enhance the appearance of your smile but also improve oral function and prevent long-term dental issues. Consult an orthodontist to determine if braces are the right option for you.

Different Jaw Surgeries that Can Supplement Dental Braces Treatment
Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects jaw deformities and realigns the jaw to support orthodontic treatments like braces. It not only enhances dental alignment but also improves facial symmetry and functionality. The surgery is typically performed after the jaw has fully developed, around ages 14–16 for women and 17–21 for men.
Benefits of Jaw Surgery:
- Enhances biting and chewing efficiency.
- Addresses swallowing and speaking difficulties.
- Reduces wear and tear on teeth surfaces.
- Corrects bite issues when orthodontics alone is insufficient.
- Improves lip contact, appearance, and fullness.
- Relieves TMJ pain and related problems.
- Repairs facial injuries and birth defects.
Jaw surgeries are usually performed internally, leaving no visible facial scars. They are typically scheduled 9–18 months after the start of braces treatment to allow maximum dental correction before surgery.
Types of Jaw Surgeries:
Maxillary Osteotomy (Upper Jaw)
- Performed for patients with a receded upper jaw, crossbite, open bite, or those with an overly toothy or toothless smile.
Mandibular Osteotomy (Lower Jaw)
- Used to correct a receded lower jaw, significant overjet, overbite, or underbite that cannot be fully addressed through orthodontic treatment alone.
Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)
- Suitable for cases of severe lower jaw recession, chin misalignment, or chin excess where jaw correction alone is insufficient.
Recovery and Results After Dental Braces Treatment
The recovery process following dental braces involves the final two stages of treatment:
Debanding Stage
- Brackets are removed, and the bonding agent is cleaned off.
- Teeth are polished, and any gum disease or developing cavities are treated.
- Mild gum sensitivity may occur for 1–2 weeks but will resolve naturally.
Retainer Stage
- Retainers (fixed or removable) are provided to maintain alignment and prevent relapse.
Fixed Retainers:
- Require diligent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups every 6–8 months to ensure they remain intact.
Removable Retainers:
- Must be worn as per the orthodontist’s instructions.
- Consult your dentist immediately if the retainer appliance breaks or becomes ill-fitting.
With proper care and follow-up, patients can enjoy long-lasting results and a perfect, confident smile.
