What is Embryo or Frozen Embryo Transfer?
Embryo transfer is the final and one of the most critical steps in the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process. This procedure involves placing a fertilized egg (embryo) into the woman’s uterus to facilitate implantation, leading to fetal development and, ideally, a healthy pregnancy.
Timing of Embryo Transfer
- The transfer typically occurs 5 to 6 days after the egg retrieval in the IVF process when the embryo has reached a stage suitable for implantation.
Types of Embryos Used in Transfer
Fresh Embryo
- Immediately transferred after fertilization and development in the lab.
- Usually preferred when the uterine lining is healthy and well-prepared during the same IVF cycle.
Frozen Embryo (FET – Frozen Embryo Transfer)
- Embryos are frozen and stored for future use.
- Allows flexibility in timing and can be used in a subsequent cycle when the uterine lining is optimal.
Blastocyst
- An embryo that has developed for about 5–6 days and reached the blastocyst stage.
- Offers higher success rates as it is more likely to implant in the uterine lining.
This process is meticulously planned and executed by fertility specialists to optimize the chances of a successful pregnancy.

How is Embryo transfer or Frozen Embryo Transfer performed?
Embryo transfer is a relatively pain-free procedure performed in a hospital or fertility clinic. This procedure is performed after the fertilization process, generally 5 days after the egg retrieval process in IVF. It is performed in the following steps:
- The patient receives a mild sedative to ensure that she experiences no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
- Once the patient is sedated, the doctor inserts a catheter- a long, thin, and flexible tube, into the uterus, through your vagina and cervix.
- With the help of a syringe, the doctor transfers an embryo or multiple embryos to your uterus and allows them to implant in the lining of the uterus.
How Is Embryo Transfer or Frozen Embryo Transfer Performed?
Embryo transfer is a relatively simple and pain-free procedure typically performed in a hospital or fertility clinic. It takes place after the fertilization process, usually 5 days after egg retrieval in an IVF cycle. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how the procedure is performed:
1. Sedation for Comfort
The patient is given a mild sedative to ensure comfort and relaxation, so there is no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
2. Insertion of the Catheter
Once sedated, the doctor carefully inserts a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) into the uterus via the vagina and cervix. This is done with precision to avoid any harm to the surrounding tissues.
3. Embryo Transfer
Using a syringe, the doctor transfers the embryo or multiple embryos into the uterus, ensuring they are placed in a suitable location for implantation. The embryos are allowed to attach to the uterine lining, which is crucial for a successful pregnancy.
Embryo transfer is a relatively quick and non-invasive procedure, offering hope to many women and couples seeking to start or expand their families through IVF or frozen embryo transfer.

What Happens After Embryo Transfer?
After the embryo transfer, women are generally allowed to return home on the same day. However, since the ovaries might be enlarged after the process, the fertility specialist may advise avoiding strenuous activities such as heavy workouts, lifting weights, or exertion, as these could cause complications.
Some women may experience the following side effects:
- Mild cramping
- Passing small amounts of blood or clear fluid due to cervical swabbing, which is done before the transfer
- Tenderness in the breasts due to increased estrogen levels
- Bloating and constipation
These side effects are typically short-lived and subside with time. However, if they persist, it’s important to consult a doctor to rule out infections, twisted ovaries, or other severe conditions.
Pregnancy Test and Next Steps
About a week after the embryo transfer, the fertility specialist will take a blood sample to check for pregnancy. If the test is positive, the doctor will proceed with prenatal care. If it’s negative, the progesterone medication will be stopped, and the doctor may suggest trying another cycle of IVF and embryo transfer.
Risks and Precautions of Embryo Transfer
While the embryo transfer procedure has minimal risks, some complications may arise, particularly due to increased hormonal stimulation. These risks include:
- Blood clots or blockage of blood vessels
- Some bleeding or increased vaginal discharge
- Infections
Additionally, there may be complications related to anesthesia, especially if the patient is allergic to it. Contrary to some misconceptions, embryo transfer does not increase the likelihood of a miscarriage, and the risk is the same as that of a natural conception.
The most significant complication associated with embryo transfer is the increased risk of multiple pregnancies, which can lead to a higher chance of disabilities in children and stillbirth.
