What Is PCNL Surgery?
PCNL Surgery, short for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, is a minimally invasive procedure for treating large kidney stones or stones in the upper ureter that cannot pass naturally and do not respond to other techniques like Shock Wave Lithotripsy or Laser Ureteroscopy. This advanced procedure involves making a small incision to access the kidney directly and remove the stones.
PCNL Surgery is highly effective for stones larger than 2 cm and has largely replaced traditional open surgeries due to its minimally invasive nature, reduced pain, and quicker recovery. It is designed to relieve painful symptoms caused by large kidney stones with minimal complications, enabling patients to resume their normal lives with ease.
For expert care and affordable PCNL surgery costs, consult Curific Health Care today.

What Happens During PCNL Surgery?
PCNL Procedure
As with any other surgery, the doctors suggest some diagnostic tests before PCNL surgery. These tests help them determine the size and number of stones and rule out underlying diseases or conditions that might affect the efficacy of the procedure. Some common diagnostic tests performed before PCNL surgery include:
- Imaging tests (X Rays, abdominal ultrasound, MRI)
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test
- Blood test
- Urinalysis
PCNL Procedure
PCNL surgery is performed in the following steps:
- The patient is sedated with general anesthesia before the surgery. This helps in keeping the patient asleep throughout the surgery.
- Next, the surgeon makes a small incision in the flank area and then inserts a nephroscope with x-ray guidance to determine the exact location of the stone.
- Upon locating the stone, the surgeon uses a thin needle to access the kidney’s urine-collecting system. This is done with the help of a guidewire, which permits safe access for the nephroscope.
- When access is achieved, the surgeon proceeds to extract the stones. In some cases, the stones are removed using microforceps. However, if the stones are too large, the surgeon might use a laser to break them into smaller fragments before extracting them from the system.
- Finally, after removing all the stones, the surgeons use contrast to confirm that no stones or fragments are left in the ureter and then place a drainage catheter.
- In some patients, the surgeons use PCNL with DJ stenting, thin and tiny tubes that ensure that swelling does not affect the drainage of urine. They are generally kept for 10 to 14 days and then removed.
How to Prepare for PCNL Surgery?
Proper preparation for PCNL surgery is essential to ensure a smooth surgical experience and minimize risks. Your doctor will provide specific preoperative instructions tailored to your condition. Here are some common tips to help you prepare for the procedure:
- Ask Questions: Discuss all aspects of the surgery with your doctor, including the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes. This will help alleviate any anxiety and keep you well-informed.
- Inform About Allergies: If you have any allergies to anesthesia or other medications, make sure your doctor is aware. This will help prevent adverse reactions during or after the surgery.
- Fasting Before Surgery: Avoid eating or drinking anything for 6 to 8 hours before the surgery. This is critical to avoid complications related to anesthesia.
- Adjust Medication: Your doctor may advise you to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, a few days before the surgery to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding.

What Is the PCNL Surgery Recovery Time?
Complete recovery after PCNL surgery generally takes about 4 to 6 weeks, though this may vary depending on the individual. To aid recovery and reduce the risk of complications, doctors provide specific postoperative instructions. Here are some common guidelines:
- Avoid Heavy Lifting and Strenuous Activities: Steer clear of these for a couple of weeks after surgery to prevent strain on the healing area.
- Manage Pain: Minor discomfort or pain is normal after PCNL surgery. Your doctor will prescribe pain-relief medications to help you manage this. If you notice bleeding or other abnormalities, consult your doctor immediately.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to assist in flushing out any small fragments of kidney stones naturally.
- Fiber-Rich Diet: Incorporate foods high in fiber to avoid constipation and minimize straining during bowel movements, which can help with the healing process.
What Are the Benefits of PCNL Surgery?
PCNL surgery is the preferred treatment for kidney stones 2 cm or larger due to its advanced, minimally invasive nature. Below are some notable benefits:
- Minimal Incision and No Visible Scars: The procedure uses a small incision, resulting in less noticeable scarring.
- Minimal Bleeding and Painless: The surgery involves minimal to no bleeding and is generally pain-free.
- Low Risk of Complications: PCNL surgery has a high success rate and poses very few risks compared to traditional methods.
- Faster Recovery: Patients recover more quickly, with most resuming daily activities within a week.
- Shorter Hospital Stay: The procedure typically requires less time in the hospital than conventional surgeries.
