What Is Prostatectomy?
Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the prostate gland, either partially or entirely. This surgery is performed to address conditions like prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Depending on the patient’s condition and the surgical approach, prostatectomy can be performed through:
- Open surgery
- Laparoscopic techniques
- Robotic-assisted techniques
About the Prostate Gland:
The prostate gland is a vital part of the male reproductive system. Located in the male pelvis, just beneath the urinary bladder, it surrounds the urethra. The gland’s primary role is to produce and transport seminal fluid, which nourishes and protects sperm.
Why Is Prostatectomy Performed?
Prostatectomy is often recommended for:
- Prostate Cancer:
- To remove the cancerous prostate gland and reduce the spread of cancer.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):
- To alleviate symptoms such as urinary retention or blockage caused by an enlarged prostate.
For advanced, cost-effective prostatectomy surgery performed by skilled urologists, consult Curific Health Care.

Types of Prostatectomy
Prostatectomy procedures are categorized primarily into two types based on the condition being treated:
1. Radical Prostatectomy
- Overview:
This procedure involves the removal of the entire prostate gland along with the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. - Purpose:
- Commonly recommended for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, especially when there is a risk of metastasis.
- Techniques Used:
- Open surgery
- Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques
2. Simple Prostatectomy
- Overview:
In this procedure, only the affected portion of the prostate causing obstruction is removed, leaving the rest of the gland intact. - Purpose:
- Primarily used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.
- Considerations:
- Open simple prostatectomy is associated with a higher risk of complications and a longer recovery period.
- Minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic or robotic) are now preferred for better outcomes and quicker recovery.
What Happens During Prostatectomy Surgery?
Diagnostic Tests Before Surgery
Doctors recommend several diagnostic tests to determine the severity and nature of the condition before prostatectomy:
- Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
- Assesses prostate size, shape, and abnormalities through a rectal exam.
- Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
- Measures PSA levels in the blood to evaluate prostate health. Elevated levels indicate issues such as BPH or prostate cancer.
- Cystoscopy
- A scope is inserted through the urethra to examine the prostate’s size and the urinary tract.
- Ultrasound
- A rectal probe provides imaging of the prostate to determine its size and structure.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Provides detailed imaging for diagnosing aggressive prostate cancer.
- Prostate Biopsy
- Samples prostate tissue to confirm or rule out cancer.
Preparation Before Surgery
Proper preparation ensures a smooth surgical experience and reduces risks:
- Bowel Prep: Use of laxatives or enemas to clean the bowel.
- Dietary Adjustments: Follow the doctor’s dietary recommendations.
- Stop Smoking: Discontinue smoking at least two weeks before surgery to improve healing.
- Medication Review: Pause or adjust medications that might interfere with the procedure.
Prostatectomy Procedures
-
Laser Prostatectomy
- A laser is inserted via a scope to remove or shrink excess prostate tissue.
- Advantages: Minimal bleeding, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery.
-
Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy
- A surgeon uses a robotic console to perform precise, minimally invasive surgery.
- Benefits:
- Smaller incisions and faster recovery.
- Nerve-sparing techniques to preserve sexual and urinary function.
-
Open Radical Prostatectomy
- Involves a large incision in the lower abdomen.
- Removes the entire prostate gland along with nearby tissues.
- Typically used for prostate cancer treatment.
-
Open Simple Prostatectomy
- Focuses on removing only the problematic part of the prostate affecting the urethra.
- A Foley catheter and temporary drainage tubes are used to aid recovery.

Recovery & After Care
After the prostatectomy procedure, you’ll be prescribed pain medication once the IV is removed. The doctor will assist you in walking on the day of surgery and will teach you some foot exercises to do while lying in bed.
If the doctor deems you fit to go home, the pelvic drain will be removed, and you will be prepared for discharge on the same day. However, you may need to return for staple removal. You’ll go home with a catheter in place, which is typically needed for 7 to 10 days after surgery. Full recovery of urinary control can take up to a year.
Here are some tips to help speed up your recovery after surgery:
- Gradually resume activities: You can get back to your regular routine within a week or two.
- Follow-up visits: See your doctor regularly to ensure proper healing. We recommend visiting your urologist every three months during the first year after surgery.
- Avoid driving: Refrain from driving for at least a week or until your urologist clears you.
- Kegel exercises: Perform them regularly to help strengthen pelvic muscles.
- Sexual activity: Resume sexual activity only after your doctor confirms it’s safe. After a simple prostatectomy, you may ejaculate with little to no semen, but orgasms can still occur. For radical prostatectomy, it may take 18 months or more to fully recover erectile function.
Risks of Prostatectomy
Like all surgeries, prostatectomy carries some risks. These include:
- Bleeding
- Urinary incontinence
- Urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Erectile dysfunction
- Narrowing of the urethra
- Development of lymphoceles (cysts containing lymph)
Benefits of Prostatectomy
Prostatectomy provides several benefits, including:
- Permanent cancer removal: Prostatectomy completely removes the prostate tissue and surrounding structures, eliminating cancer cells from the body.
- Relief from BPH symptoms: The procedure helps alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as:
- Frequent urge to urinate, especially at night
- Difficulty maintaining urinary stream
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- A feeling of fullness in the bladder, etc.
The urologists at Curific Health Care perform prostatectomy procedures with precision to minimize postoperative complications. With advanced training in prostatectomy techniques, they take all necessary precautions to ensure a smooth and safe recovery.
