What is Stapler Circumcision?
Stapler circumcision is a modern, minimally invasive method used for the removal of the foreskin in a safe, quick, and efficient manner. This technique uses a special instrument called a circumcision stapler (also known as an anastomat), specifically designed for this procedure.
During the surgery, the stapler is carefully positioned over the penis. Once activated, it removes the foreskin in a single, swift motion while simultaneously sealing the incision using a silicone ring or non-absorbable staples. The amount of foreskin to be removed is predetermined, making the process precise and ensuring predictable results for both the patient and the surgeon.
What Happens During Stapler Circumcision Surgery?
Diagnosis
The diagnostic tests required for stapler circumcision vary depending on whether the surgery is medically necessary or performed for aesthetic or religious reasons. For non-medical circumcisions, a general health checkup is typically sufficient.
However, if the patient experiences pain, infection, or inflammation near the tip of the penis, circumcision may be medically required. To confirm this, the surgeon may conduct several diagnostic tests such as:
- Urinalysis: A laboratory test to analyze the appearance, concentration, and contents of the urine to detect conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs) or kidney issues.
- Tissue Culture: If any discharge is present, it is cultured and examined for signs of bacterial or fungal infection.
- Blood Tests: Tests such as random blood sugar or bleeding tests may be performed, especially if the patient has underlying systemic health issues.
Procedure
Stapler circumcision is a minimally invasive procedure that offers quicker recovery and improved results compared to traditional circumcision. It can be done using either local or general anesthesia, with local anesthesia being preferred for most patients.
Once anesthesia is administered, the penis is cleaned and disinfected. The stapler is then positioned over the penis, ensuring it is securely in place to avoid tearing the foreskin and to protect the glans (head of the penis) from the surgical blade. When the stapler is triggered, it removes the foreskin and simultaneously seals the incision with a silicone ring.
Afterward, the stapler is removed, and gauze is applied to the area to control any bleeding. The wound is dressed with a compression bandage, and the patient is moved to a recovery area for observation.

How to Prepare for Stapler Circumcision Surgery?
Medical History: Make sure your surgeon has access to your full medical record, including details about any allergies and medications you are taking. This will help the surgeon prepare for the procedure accordingly.
Dietary Precautions: Discuss with your urologist any necessary dietary precautions. If you’re undergoing local anesthesia, typically no restrictions are needed. However, for general anesthesia, you should refrain from eating or drinking after midnight the day before surgery.
Transportation: You won’t be able to drive yourself home due to the effects of anesthesia. Make sure you have someone to drive you home after the procedure.
Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco: Refrain from consuming alcohol or tobacco (smoking, gutka, beedi, etc.) for a few days before the surgery. These substances can slow healing and may increase the risk of anesthesia-related complications.
Time Off Work: Arrange for at least a couple of days off work after the surgery, as you may not feel fit to return to work immediately.
What to Expect After Stapler Circumcision Surgery?
Discharge and Recovery: After the surgery, you will be discharged the same day, usually within a few hours, so you can rest and recover at home. You will need to visit your urologist for a follow-up consultation and wound inspection 2-3 days after the surgery.
Follow-Up Appointment: During this visit, the surgeon will remove the compression bandage and inspect the surgical site for any signs of bleeding or infection. The wound will be left open for recovery, and the silicone ring placed on the penis will naturally fall off within 10-14 days as the incision heals.
Return to Work: You can typically return to work within a week after the surgery. However, you must avoid sexual activity, including masturbation, for at least a month to allow proper healing.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Refrain from engaging in strenuous exercises, such as running or weightlifting, as they may place strain on the muscles surrounding the penis and hinder the healing process.
For Children: If your child is undergoing circumcision, consult their pediatrician before the surgery to discuss appropriate anesthesia usage and expected recovery timelines.

When is Stapler Circumcision Required?
There are several reasons why you may require or want stapler circumcision surgery. Some of these include:
Aesthetic Concerns: If you have any aesthetic issues with your penis, such as dissatisfaction with the size, shape, or general appearance of the foreskin.
Pain or Discomfort: If you experience pain or discomfort while urinating.
Foreskin Issues: If you are unable to retract your foreskin without pain or bleeding.
Infection Signs: If you notice foul discharge at the tip of your penis.
Swelling: If your penis is swollen or inflamed.
Stapler circumcision can also be an effective solution for medical conditions like balanitis, phimosis (tight foreskin), paraphimosis, posthitis, and balanoposthitis.
Benefits of Stapler Circumcision
Stapler circumcision has many benefits, making it a preferred choice for both adults with penile issues and newborns undergoing circumcision for religious reasons. According to numerous research studies, the advantages of stapler circumcision often outweigh the risks. Some benefits include:
Prevention of Infections: Circumcision reduces the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV. It also lowers the likelihood of penile cancer in men and cervical cancer in their sexual partners.
Minimized Risk and Recovery: In the past, open circumcision was the norm, but stapler and laser circumcision are now preferred methods. Stapler circumcision, in particular, provides better results with fewer complications.
Preserved Tissue and Minimal Blood Loss: Stapler circumcision preserves the surrounding tissue and minimizes blood loss, making it a safer procedure compared to open circumcision.
Short Recovery Time: The recovery period for stapler circumcision is typically short, with most patients fully recovered within a couple of weeks.
Post-Surgery Protection: The silicone ring used during stapler circumcision helps prevent infections and supports faster recovery.
At Curific Health Care, we offer stapler circumcision, laser circumcision, and frenuloplasty surgeries to treat various foreskin-related issues effectively.

Recovery Rate and Tips After Stapler Circumcision
The recovery process for stapler circumcision is similar for both children and adults. However, newborns generally heal faster, with their recovery time typically being less than 7-10 days. In babies, the silicone ring falls off within 5-7 days, compared to 10-14 days in adults.
Recovery Tips for Babies:
- Wound Care: Apply petroleum jelly and a soft gauze to the surgical site to prevent it from sticking to the diaper. Reapply the bandage after each diaper change.
- Diaper Care: Ensure your baby doesn’t sit in a wet or dirty diaper for extended periods. Fasten the diapers loosely and avoid putting any pressure on the surgical incision when holding your baby.
- Bathing: Instead of a full bath, give sponge baths during the recovery period. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the penis with soap or a washcloth—just rinse gently with warm water.

- Clothing: Wear loose-fitting underwear to avoid irritation and discomfort. Apply petroleum jelly to prevent the penis from sticking to the underwear.
- Avoid Sexual Activity: Refrain from sexual activity, including masturbation, for at least 5-6 weeks to allow the penile tissues to heal fully.
- Rest and Healing: Avoid any strenuous activities or exercises during the initial recovery period to support healing.
Following these recovery tips will help ensure a smooth and fast recovery for both adults and babies after stapler circumcision.
